GBI Investigating Death at Floyd County Jail

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been brought in, as part of normal procedure, after the death of an inmate at the Floyd County Jail on Sunday (February 18th).  At approximately 11:50am, Floyd County Police Officer Herschel Johnson responded to 400 Fourth Street in Shannon – where he took into custody 37 year old Michael Wayne Thacker, of a 435 Fourth Street address.

Thacker was transported to the Floyd County Jail and booked in at 12:46pm – charged with Violation of Parole (Warrant # 424991).  Shortly after being booked into jail Thacker began to exhibit serious medical problems – at which time, jail and medical supervisors requested an ambulance to transport him to Floyd Medical Center for treatment.

The ambulance arrived at the Floyd County Jail at 2:12pm and Thacker was transported for treatment.  After arriving and receiving treatment, he was pronounced dead at 2:56pm.  Floyd County Coroner Gene Proctor was notified shortly thereafter, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been asked to investigate the circumstances of the death of Thacker.

Proctor said Thacker’s body would be sent to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy.
