Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images(SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.) — Oakland Athletics catcher Bruce Maxwell entered the spotlight this past season as the first Major League Baseball player to kneel during the national anthem. Now, he’s been arrested on a gun charge.
Scottsdale police said they went to Maxwell’s home Saturday night after receiving calls that a person had a gun. A female food delivery person alleged Maxwell pointed a gun at her. He ended up being booked on aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and disorderly conduct.
“We are disappointed to learn of the allegations,” the Oakland A’s said in a statement Sunday afternoon. “We take this situation and ongoing investigation seriously. We are gathering information from the proper authorities and do not have further comment at this time.”
Maxwell will be held in police custody pending his first appearance, police say. The 26-year-old was projected to be the A’s starting catcher next season. He hit .237 with three home runs and 22 RBI in 76 games this past year.
