“Blade Runner 2049” sprints to box office-topping $31.5 million weekend

(NEW YORK) — Blade Runner 2049‘s estimated $31.5 million won the weekend box office, despite falling far below industry projections which had been in the $45-55 million range. The sci-fi thriller — starring Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford — fared better overseas, where it earned an estimated $50.2 million.

One of the week’s other debuts — The Mountain Between Us, starring Kate Winslet and Idris Elba — finished in second place with an estimated $10.1 million haul.

It took third place with an estimated $9.65 million.

Another one of the weekend’s new releases, the animated My Little Pony: The Movie — featuring the voices of Liev Schreiber, Michael Pena, Emily Blunt, Kristin Chenoweth, Taye Diggs and Zoe Saldana — bowed in fourth place with an estimated $8.8 million.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle rounded out the top five, earning an estimated $8.1 million.

The Florida Project, opening in limited release, impressed in its debut, earning an estimated $152,622.

Here are the top 10 movies from Friday through Sunday, with estimated weekend gross ticket sales:
