The announcement comes as NASA continues working on the deep space gateway concept, meant to create a space station near the moon as the first step in expanding human presence in the solar system. “While the deep space gateway is still in concept formulation, NASA is pleased to see growing international interest in moving into cislunar spce as the next step for advancing human space exploration,” NASA’s acting administrator Robert Lightfoot said.

Studies of the gateway concept are also intended to help make future decisions regarding potential collaboration.

Igor Komarov, head of Roscosmos, said that Russia plans to produce one to three modules for the station.
