Best known as Larry David’s father on Curb Your Enthusiasm, Berman got his start as David did, in stand-up comedy some 60 years ago — though Berman called himself a “sit-down comic,” sitting on a stool most of the time when on stage performing.

Berman’s signature bit was conducting increasingly ludicrous, one-sided telephone conversations. His 1959 debut album, Inside Shelley Berman, was the first comedy album to go gold, and the first non-musical recording to win a Grammy. Berman was also the first stand-up comic to perform at Carnegie Hall.

In later years, Berman left nightclub performing for work as an actor, appearing in dozens of films, television shows and Broadway plays. In addition to Curb Your Enthusiasm, which earned him an Emmy nomination, he also had a recurring role as a judge on TV’s Boston Public.
