Washington Nationals use home run barrage in blowout of Milwaukee Brewers

Photo by Allen Kee / ESPN Images(WASHINGTON) — The Washington Nationals tied a Major League Baseball record on Thursday, bashing five home runs in a single inning in their 15-2 blowout of the Milwaukee Brewers.

In an incredible third inning, which began with pitcher Max Scherzer at the plate, Washington scored seven runs and brought eleven men to bat. Scherzer led off with a walk, ahead of outfielder Brian Goodwin’s 10th home run of the season. Shortstop Wilmer Difo hit a blast of his own, and slugger Bryce Harper followed suit.

The three straight homers marked the first time since 2011 that the Nationals accomplished that feat. But a resurgent Ryan Zimmerman added to it — becoming the fourth consecutive Washington player to knock one out of the park.

It was the first time since the 2010 Arizona Diamondbacks that any team had hit four straight home runs.

A pigeon was spotted behind home plate during the power-packed inning, leading to a number of jokes among Nationals beat writers.

After second baseman Daniel Murphy flew out to center field — and received mock boos — third baseman Anthony Rendon added a bomb of his own — tying the all-time big league record.

Rendon’s home run knocked Milwaukee starter Michael Blazek out of the game. Reliever Wily Peralta allowed four more hits and another run to cap the seven-run inning.

The Nationals batted around again the following inning, hitting two more homers en route to six more runs.

Five teams in history have hit five home runs in one inning, with the 2006 Brewers being the most recent.
