A fire inspector has told Floyd County Sheriff’s Office officials they have 30 days to come up with a plan to fix cited deficiencies or the jail’s occupancy certificate will be revoked.
Sheriff Tim Burkhalter stated that would mean all of the inmates would be housed at other facilities – at a cost of about $750,000 a month.
These are problems Burkhalter said he has brought to the commission and discussed to the point of exhaustion. That list, according to the sheriff, includes locks that won’t lock, doors that won’t stay locked and fire alarms in the control room that will not re-set.
A special purpose, local option sales tax approved by voters in 2013 provided funding to address the issue of jail locks.
That project is expected to be completed over the new few weeks.
Burkhalter said he felt like the problems could be addressed within the 30-day time frame.
According to the fire safety report – a review of the Complete Plan of Correction is set to be conducted on April 10th.
