During a Special Called Meeting of the Cherokee County Commission last Thursday – Chairman Kirk Day outlined four options for the division of the 1% Educational Tax between the Board of Education and the General Fund – and, during their regular meeting on Monday, they chose to go with a different division than any of the plans floated last week

The motion was passed following one of the longest commission meetings on record – stretching from the 9:00am planning session through a 2:00pm adjournment.

The 1% Educational Tax went into effect October 1st 2011, and the voters extended that tax for a period of two years, by an overwhelming majority in 2012. 

And now, it looks as though it’ll be up to the voters of Cherokee County to once again renew that tax, or let it lapse – in the 2014 June Primary.

Following that meeting, we spoke with Commission Chairman Kirk Day and asked him if having that dissenting vote would perhaps create any sort of a problem getting the issue on the ballot

We also spoke with Commissioner Marcie Foster – who put forth that sole ‘NO’ vote based upon the percentages outlined in the motion; Commissioner Foster was however, steadfast in her belief that every school in the county deserves to have its own Resource Officer

The next meeting of the Cherokee County Commission is scheduled for Monday, February 24th, at 5:00pm in the County Administration Building.
