Message From Cherokee County EMA Director Regarding Severe Weather

MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR ROGERS – SEVERE WEATHER OUTBREAK
I know many of you are seeing a lot of information about the severe storms expected over the next two days. It has been a while since we’ve been at a Moderate Risk (Level 4 out of 5) for severe weather. Unfortunately, we are facing multiple rounds of storms, and we want to make sure everyone is informed and prepared.
What to Expect: Friday Night – Saturday Morning: The National Weather Service warns of possible tornadoes, damaging winds up to 60 mph, and large hail (quarter-sized or larger).
Saturday Afternoon – Early Sunday Morning: The threat increases significantly, with the potential for stronger tornadoes, winds up to 70 mph, and hail as large as golf balls.
These storms could be dangerous. Do not wait until the last minute—make a plan now for where you will go if you need to take shelter.
Why This is Serious: Even though tonight’s risk is lower, conditions are favorable for severe storms. If a storm develops, it could quickly strengthen into a supercell capable of producing large hail, strong winds, and tornadoes.
Saturday is expected to bring the strongest and most severe storms we have seen in years. If there is a break in the rain Saturday morning, the atmosphere will be primed for scattered supercells that could produce:
✔️ Strong to violent, long-track tornadoes
✔️ Large hail
✔️ Severe winds
A squall line could also form later in the day, with embedded supercells adding to the risk.
How to Stay Safe:
✅ Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.
CodeRED is Cherokee County’s official mass notification system.
NOAA Weather Radios provide alerts directly from the National Weather Service.
✅ Cherokee County EMA App offers real-time updates and alerts.
✅ Emergency Alerts (WEA) – Make sure these are turned on in your phone’s settings.
✅ Know your safe place. Be ready to take shelter immediately if a Tornado Warning is issued.
✅ Storm shelters in Cherokee County will open when a Tornado Watch is issued.
If you plan to use a shelter, make sure you can get there in time.
Shelters are NOT pet-friendly – please make arrangements for your animals.
Bring essential items: medications, phone chargers, snacks, and water.
Be respectful – clean up after yourself so the shelter remains safe and comfortable for everyone.
Final Reminder: Pay attention to ALL weather warnings. If a warning is issued, take action immediately – your safety depends on it. This is a serious weather event, and we need everyone to stay informed and prepared.
Our office will continue monitoring the situation and providing updates as needed. Stay tuned, stay alert, and most importantly, stay safe.
