The Down Syndrome Alabama Honor Bash was held in Gadsden Saturday to raise awareness and funds for Down Syndrome Alabama. The organization seeks to bring Lifelong Awareness, Acceptance and Advocacy for People with Down syndrome. According to their website, “We envision and strive for an Alabama where individuals with Down syndrome are accepted and included for who they are. We provide hope and support to each person and their families with educational resources and networking opportunities throughout all stages of life. https://downsyndromealabama.org/
The event opened up with an early morning 5 K run. The runner with the fastest time was 11 Year Old Alexandria Resident, Gaston Wood. Wood completed the run in 21 Minutes and 46 seconds! Gaston is fairly new to long distance running, but this is not his first race to win. We had the chance to speak with Mr. Wood and his family after the race. He is considering longer runs, but also plays football and may have to make a decision on which sport he wants to focus on. He is a student at Alexandria.

After the 5K Race, and event was held at Back 40 Beer in Gadsden, with activities for kids and families. Food, beer, ice cream, cotton candy, a sensory room, and activities were available while those in attendance hung out and listened to live music. Door Prizes were auctioned off to raise funds as well.
It was a beautiful day for the event, though a bit breezy at times. Everyone seemed to have a great time, more importantly, doing so in coming together for a wonderful cause.
