Class-of-2026

SHANNON FAGAN: Trying to keep my hot streak going

Maybe I need to take a trip to a casino, cause I’m on a roll.

Three of the past four weeks of the high school football season I’ve picked perfectly, including last week’s 7-0 mark. In fact, I’ve only lost one game over the past month (23-1 for those counting), and that game was decided by just a touchdown.

My current hot streak has elevated my record to 37-4 overall for the season, which translates to picking correctly at a 90-percent clip.

If only I could say the same with college football.

Will I keep rolling the dice in my favor this week? Read on to find out ‘What In The World is Shannon Fagan Thinking?’ for lucky Week 7.

Cedar Bluff (2-5) at Pisgah (6-0)

I wish I could send the Tigers a little bit of my luck of late their way. They seem like they just can’t catch a break this season. They’ve suffered several injuries and have been on the back end of two one-point losses, including last week’s 20-19 setback at Pleasant Valley.

As if that wasn’t enough, now they’ve got to travel to top-ranked Pisgah and contend with the Eagles. I’m afraid the woes will continue.

The pick: Pisgah.

J.B. Pennington (5-2) at Piedmont (6-0)

The Bulldogs we’re used to seeing are back. They’re coming off a dominating 61-14 victory over previously unbeaten Locust Fork.

Piedmont is 7-0 in the all-time series against the Tigers, including a 44-14 victory last season. Make it 8-0 after Friday night.

The pick: Piedmont.

Collinsville (4-2) at Sylvania (4-2)

The Panthers pay a visit to former quarterback and offensive coordinator Tanner Nelson and the Rams.

This game features two prominent backs in Collinsville’s Quintavious Rogers and Sylvania’s Aiden Parham. Rogers has gained over 550 yards and scored 12 touchdowns on the ground. He was more of a threat in the Panther passing game last week against Geraldine, finishing with seven catches for 163 yards and two touchdowns from 70 and 66 yards in a 41-27 loss.

Parham has paced the Rams all season. Prior to last week’s 49-17 loss at Fyffe, Parham had posted three straight 200-yard games, totaling 727 yards and 11 touchdowns in wins over Geraldine, Whitesburg Christian and Plainview.

Sylvania has won the last six meetings in this series and eight of the last nine. In keeping with theme of this column, I’ll go with the Rams to keep their streak going against the Panthers.

The pick: Sylvania

Spring Garden (7-0) at Gaylesville (3-3)

With the way both of these teams are running the football, this might be one of those less-than-two-hour contests.

In last week’s win over Appalachian, Spring Garden’s John Welsh ran for 161 yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns. Connor Bates gained 94 yards on 14 totes with two scores in the Panthers’ 46-21 victory.

Meanwhile, Gaylesville’s Alex Baty battered Ider for 307 yards on 17 carries and scored five touchdowns in leading the Trojans to a 56-0 blowout. Baty eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season with his rushing performance. He now has 1,103 yards on 117 carries with 17 touchdowns this season.

Jack Sentell didn’t have too shabby of a game for the Trojans either, gaining 75 yards on five carries.

Spring Garden’s been on a hot streak all season, and I look for that to continue on the Trojans’ homecoming and the Foothills Tractor Game of the Week.

The pick: Spring Garden.

Cherokee County (6-1) at Hokes Bluff (5-1)

Things could get very interesting in Class 4A Region 6 the next couple of weeks, thanks to Alexandria’s 28-27 upset win over Hokes Bluff last week.

The Warriors could distance themselves even further in the region from Hokes Bluff with a win tomorrow night, setting up a huge showdown between them and Alexandria next Friday.

A Warrior loss this week, coupled with an Alexandria win over Ashville, and there’s a 3-way tie in the region.

Cherokee County and Hokes Bluff haven’t played since 2019, and that was a doozy of a game, won by the Eagles 28-27 in double overtime. In fact, the Warriors have lost the last four meetings with Hokes Bluff, with all of those contests decided by a touchdown or less.

The Warriors are coming off a hard-fought game themselves against Anniston. Behind their defense, the Warriors won 14-0 to pick up their third shutout in the past four weeks, and they’ve given up just 12 points in the past five weeks.

I think this should be a great game that comes down to the end, but I like the Warriors to escape the Bluff with a win.

The pick: Cherokee County.
