GADSDEN– The World’s Longest Yard Sale will return to Gadsden Thursday, August 6, launching four days of bargain hunting along a 690-mile route through six states.

The 127 Yard Sale will continue through Sunday, August 9. Gadsden serves as the southern end of the route, while Addison, Michigan, marks its northern endpoint.

Organizers say the event connects more than 10,000 vendors and over 35 major vendor stops. Hundreds of thousands of shoppers and sellers reportedly participate each year.

Gadsden Starting Point

Noccalula Falls Park serves as the Gadsden starting point for shoppers traveling north. The park is located at 1500 Noccalula Road.

The Greater Gadsden Area Tourism event calendar lists the sale from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. each day. Admission to the Gadsden event is free.

However, hours can vary at individual roadside sales. Organizers say most vendors along the larger route open between 8 and 9 a.m. and remain open until approximately 5 p.m. Some sellers stay open later.

Noccalula Falls Park is also accepting reservations for vendor spaces. Sellers should call the park office at 256-549-4663 for availability and additional information.

The official vendor directory currently lists Noccalula Falls Park and a location at 2266 Tabor Road as major vendor stops in Gadsden. Other listed Alabama stops include Akins Shady Pines near Fort Payne and the Collinsville Crossroads.

Organizers define a major vendor stop as one location or small area containing at least 25 vendors.

Route Follows Highway 127 and Lookout Mountain Parkway

Most of the sale follows U.S. Highway 127 through Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee. The route passes through Chattanooga before continuing along Lookout Mountain Parkway through Georgia and Alabama.

The official southern endpoint is at the intersection of Noccalula Road and Body Street in Gadsden.

From there, northbound shoppers follow Noccalula Road to Tabor Road. The route continues onto Alabama 176 and DeKalb County Road 89 through areas that include Dogtown, Five Points, Fort Payne, DeSoto State Park, Fischer, and Mentone.

After crossing into Georgia, the route eventually travels through Lookout Mountain and reconnects with Highway 127 in Chattanooga. Organizers provide turn-by-turn Alabama and Georgia directions because the route uses several different highways and county roads.

The complete sale crosses Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, and Michigan.

Sale Began as Rural Tourism Promotion

The 127 Yard Sale began in 1987 through the efforts of Mike Walker, a former Fentress County executive in Jamestown, Tennessee.

Walker developed the event to encourage travelers to leave interstates such as Interstate 40 and Interstate 75. Instead, visitors could travel scenic rural highways and discover smaller communities.

The original concept promoted more than yard sales. Organizers also wanted visitors to experience local parks, historical attractions, waterways, scenic areas, arts and crafts, music, and community businesses.

Lookout Mountain Parkway was added several years after the first sale. That expansion brought the route south from Chattanooga through Georgia and northeastern Alabama to Gadsden.

Since then, the event has grown into what organizers promote as the World’s Longest Yard Sale.

What Shoppers Should Know

Sales take place in yards, fields, pastures, barns, business parking lots, churches, parks, and town centers. Some locations feature individual sellers, while major stops bring dozens of vendors together.

Although more vendors now accept credit and debit cards, organizers recommend carrying cash in several denominations. Shoppers may also want to bring boxes and packing supplies for fragile purchases.

Traffic can become heavy, especially near major vendor stops. Organizers estimate that shoppers who make frequent stops may cover only 50 to 75 miles in one day. Anyone planning to travel a large section of the route should also make lodging reservations in advance.
