Staff Reports MONTGOMERY – Spring Garden junior point guard Ace Austin and Sand Rock senior shooting guard Katelyn St.Clair are among this year’s finalists for the Alabama Sports Writers Association girls basketball players of the year. The finalists were announced early Wednesday morning. Austin, an Alabama commitment and reigning 1A Girls Player of the Year, averaged 20.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, 7.1 assists and 3.6 steals per game for the Lady Panthers (33-1). St.Clair averaged 23.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.5 steals for the Lady Wildcats (25-8). Joining Austin as 1A girls finalists are Shoals Christian’s Sarah Davis and Skyline’s Kaina King. Davis, a junior guard/forward, averaged 24.3 points, 11.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists and a steal for the Flame (21-8). King, a senior guard, averaged 16.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists and four steals for the Lady Vikings (22-8). Joining St.Clair as 2A girls finalists are Mars Hill Bible’s Belle Hill and Sulligent’s Ella Wheeler. Hill, an eighth-grade guard, averaged 23.5 points, 8.9 rebounds, four assists and 1.4 blocks for the Lady Panthers (24-7). Wheeler, a junior guard, averaged 25.9 points, 6.9 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 4.7 steals for the Lady Blue Devils (23-5). Girls and boys winners, Mr. and Miss Basketball, and the Super All-State team will be named at a luncheon banquet Tuesday, April 16 at the Montgomery Renaissance.
