Coming off a 48-22 season-opening football victory at Sand Rock on Friday, the Spring Garden Panthers moved up a spot in the latest Alabama Sports Writers Association poll. The latest rankings were released early Wednesday morning.

The Panthers (1-0) – under the guidance of first-year head coach Barrett Ragsdale – come in this week at No. 6 in the Class 1A poll. Spring Garden hosts Coosa Christian (0-1) this Friday in a rematch from last season’s second round playoff battle, won by the Conquerors 31-28.

While Spring Garden moved up a spot, Class 3A Piedmont (0-0) dropped a notch to No. 3. The Bulldogs battled defending Class 2A state champion Fyffe to a 14-14 tie in scrimmage action last week. Piedmont hosts Highway 9 rival Cherokee County on Friday.

Speaking of the Class 4A Warriors (1-0), they remain at No. 2 behind defending state champion Andalusia (1-0). Cherokee County, which defeated Class 5A Alexandria 48-14 last week, picked up a pair of first-place votes.

One other area team continues to receive consideration for the poll: Class 2A Collinsville (0-0). The Panthers travel to Gaylesville (0-1) for their season opener on Friday.
