Only three of the WEIS coverage area baseball teams made the state playoffs last season, but even in a down year, there wasn’t a shortage of all-state performers.

In all, 12 athletes were recognized by the Alabama Sports Writers Association on its all-state baseball teams, released early Friday morning.

The Class 3A Piedmont Bulldogs led the way with four honorees, including two first-team selections in senior infielder Jack Hayes and sophomore pitcher Brodie Homesley. Junior McClane Mohon made it as a second-team infielder, while sophomore Kale Austin earned an honorable mention at catcher.

Hayes batted 398 with 13 doubles, four home runs, 32 walks, 32 runs and 42 RBIs for the Bulldogs last season. Homesley, a lefty, went 9-0 with a 1.45 ERA with 59 strikeouts in 62 2/3 innings of work on the mound. Mohon batted .390 with 12 doubles, two triples, two home runs, 19 walks, 11 stolen bases, 49 runs and 25 RBIs. Austin batted .351 with six doubles, a home run, 17 walks and 33 RBIs.

Class 2A Collinsville had a pair of second teamers in senior outfielder Keaton DeBoard and eighth grade pitcher Gavin Lang. Eighth grader Mason McAteer managed an honorable mention in the infield.

DeBoard batted .337 with eight doubles, two triples, two home runs, 15 walks, 21 stolen bases, 41 runs and 27 RBIs. Lang went 6-1 with a 1.23 ERA with 73 strikeouts in over 51 innings of work on the mound. He also batted .402 with eight doubles, two home runs, 16 walks, 13 stolen bases, 33 runs and 30 RBIs. McAteer batted .414 with five doubles, a triple, two home runs, 16 walks, 20 stolen bases, 42 runs and 18 RBIs.

Sophomore Carson Tittle and senior Connor Wilson from Cherokee County claimed a Class 4A first and second team spot respectively. Tittle, an infielder, batted .500 with 14 doubles, two triples, 11 walks, 24 runs and 27 RBIs last season. Wilson, at utility, batted .413 with 12 doubles, five home runs, a triple, 22 walks, 19 runs and 26 RBIs.

Spring Garden senior Cam Welsh earned a second team pitching spot in Class 1A. Welsh went 4-2 with a 1.84 ERA with 76 strikeouts in 53 2/3 innings. He also batted .321 with four doubles, two home runs, 22 walks, 19 runs and 17 RBIs.

Cedar Bluff and Gaylesville both had an honorable mention on the 1A team in freshman Bryson Teague (utility) and junior Kyler Bradley (designated hitter) respectively.

Teague batted .444 with eight doubles, a home run, nine walks, 10 hit by pitches, 15 runs and 20 RBIs. Bradley batted .458 with 13 doubles, a triple, 10 walks, 41 stolen bases, 41 runs and 27 RBIs.
