GADSDEN– The Gadsden Police Department has announced the retirement of Officer Doug Sykes following a 31-year law enforcement career.

According to the department, Sykes’ career included 10 years of service as a military police officer. He later devoted a significant portion of his career to community policing.

Sgt. Mitchell James, identified by the department as Sykes’ supervisor and best friend, praised his commitment to the community. James said Sykes built lasting relationships with the people he served and became especially beloved by children.

In addition, Sykes regularly volunteered with the Head Start program and Gadsden City Schools. Those efforts reflected his commitment to serving others beyond his responsibilities as a police officer.

Known for his warmth and kindness, Sykes often greeted people with a hug or a smile. James said Sykes’ career was defined by the countless lives he touched along the way.

The Police Department thanked Sykes for his service and wished him well in retirement.
