WEIS Radio News has learned that escaped state prison inmate David Kyle, is back in custody; he was captured locally, being apprehended Monday morning at a residence in the Slackland community by the U.S. Marshal’s Service, Department of Corrections, and Sheriff’s Office personnel.

Kyle, 49, was serving a 99 year sentence for the brutal murder of a Cherokee County man, Shane McKnight in September of 1998.  The murder occurred in Etowah County with the trial being held the following year and Kyle being sentenced in 2000.  At that sentencing, then Etowah County Circuit Judge Roy Moore stated – if the death penalty would’ve been an option, he would have found it appropriate.

He’d been assigned to the Department of Corrections’ Red Eagle Work Center – when he escaped from their custody on April 23rd of this year (2022). 

Kyle was transported to the Cherokee County Detention Center on a charge of Escape and he will be held there until the Department of Corrections can transport him back to prison.
