Cherokee County Softball Tournament championship game headed to JSU

JACKSONVILLE – After a couple of days of discussion, the Cherokee County Softball Tournament championship game is heading to Jacksonville State’s University Field.

The championship game between Spring Garden and Cherokee County will be played next Wednesday at the home of the Gamecock softball program. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.

Both Spring Garden coach Ann Welsh and Cherokee County coach Brad Weaver are excited for the opportunity to play on a collegiate field.

“It really makes the championship a little more exciting,” said Welsh, who played for the Gamecocks in 1995-96. “Getting to play on the JSU field is a great experience for all the girls and a little touch of playing past high school. For me, it’s coming home to a place I dearly loved. I’m flooded with memories and super happy I get to make more with my team.”

Added Weaver: “We are excited to have the chance to play on a beautiful field like JSU has. Getting to play the county championship at JSU is not only exciting but also an honor. When I told my players we were playing at JSU, every one of their eyes lit up and they burst with excitement. We are looking forward to competing with a good team in a great atmosphere and hopefully some beautiful weather.”

The county championship game was rained out on Friday night at Sand Rock. The two teams met earlier in winners bracket action on Friday, with Spring Garden earning a 4-3 comeback victory.

It will be the first of two trips to University Field for Spring Garden this season. The Lady Panthers are scheduled to host their Spring Swing at JSU on March 28-29.
