Calhoun County EMA Reports Numerous Trees and Powe Lines Down Across The County

Calhoun County has been impacted by adverse weather today. At approximately, 07:30, the Emergency Management Agency (EMA) began receiving numerous reports of trees and power lines down across the entire county. Approximately 110 damage reports have been
received as of 11:00 AM. Alabama Power Company reported over 13,000 customers without power.

Two first responders were reported injured by falling debris and transported to hospitals after completing a rescue of individuals trapped in a camper.

Calhoun County’s Emergency Operations Center is staffed and the EMA is working closely with local jurisdictions and non-profit agencies to determine what assistance is needed and to provide help to those in need.

According to the National Weather Service Birmingham, Meteorologist Holly Allen, the damage that resulted from the wind event was caused from a wake low. A wake low is caused by pressure differences after a storm system moves through an area.

Calhoun County still remains in the slight risk area for severe storms this afternoon and there is a wind advisory in effect until 4 PM.

The Calhoun County Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters (VOAD) group is active and providing assistance to all who need help recovering from Thursday’s severe storms. If you are in need of assistance please call 2-1-1.

By calling 2-1-1, citizens will have direct access to available resources that will help in recovery efforts. Calhoun County VOAD can provide assistance with debris cleanup that occurred during storms on Thursday, April 23, 2020, and more through various means of recovery support.
