Bill Introduced in Legislature Which Would Give Tax Break on Cost of Storm Shelter

Representative Joe Lovvorn of Auburn has introduced a bill before the Alabama Legislature that would give a three-year tax break which would cover the cost of a storm shelter.  It would provide an income tax credit for building or installing a qualified storm shelter OR a “safe room” defined as a shelter meeting (FEMA) Federal Emergency Management Agency minimum criteria and capable of withstanding an EF-5 tornado.

That tax credit would provide for a third of the total cost and it could be used each year for a period of three years.  The credit is capped at $6,000 for a shelter at a taxpayer’s primary residence or $25,000 for a multi-family development such as an apartment building.

In order to qualify, the applicants would have to complete a form to provide documentation on the costs for the construction or installation of the shelter.
