Georgia Power is requesting the decertification of all four coal units at Plant Hammond as part of its 2019 Integrated Resource Plan filed with the Georgia Public Service Commission – which would effectively close the facility in Floyd County.

As part of Wednesday’s filing with the Georgia Public Service Commission Georgia Power is proposing new renewable energy programs – which, if approved, would increase the company’s total renewable energy capacity by some 18%.  Georgia Power is in the process of moving away from coal-powered plants and towards more natural gas fueled plants and intermittent renewable resources.

John Kraft with Georgia Power said that Plant Hammond employees who wish to stay with Georgia Power will be placed in other jobs while others could choose to retire. The company files an Integrated Resource Plan every three years with the Georgia Public Service Commission to outline its plans for cleaner more renewable energy.
