Ava DuVernay becomes the first black female to direct a $100 million-grossing film

ABC/Paula Lobo(LOS ANGELES) — After fourteen weeks at the box office, Ava DuVernay’s fantasy film, A Wrinkle in Time has officially crossed the 100 million mark.

According to the Box Office Mojo, the movie has grossed over $132.1 million worldwide. With her accomplishment, DuVernay becomes the first black woman to direct a $100 million-grossing film and the 13th black director to hit that milestone overall.

That includes Ryan Coogler, F. Gary Gray, Tim Story, Keenan Ivory Wayans, Jordan Peele, Malcolm D. Lee, John Singleton, Clark Johnson, Lee Daniels, Antoine Fuqua, Sidney Poitier and Peter Ramsey.

Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time, which stars Storm Reid, Oprah Winfrey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mindy Kaling, Reese Witherspoon and Chris Pine, follows a young girl named Meg Murry, her brother and her friend as they journey through space and time to find Meg’s father.

A Wrinkle in Time is now available for home viewing.
