Amanda Carol Gullahorn Murphy

Amanda Carol Gullahorn Murphy, of Vestavia Hills, AL. passed away peacefully in her home on March 23, 2018, sur rounded by her family. She enters Heaven after a tenacious and courageous fourteen year battle with cancer.

Amanda was born on Father’s Day, June 20, 1960, the daughter of William (Bill) Collier Gullahorn, Jr. and Sidney Carol Garrett Gullahorn. Raised in Albertville, Alabama, Amanda graduated from Albertville High School, then, attended The University of Alabama, where she graduated from the Capstone School of Nursing. While at Alabama, Amanda was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. Amanda’s childhood summers were spent “Among the Pines”, at Camp Mac in Munford, Al. While at Camp Mac she met her future husband, Robert. Camp Mac has remained a beloved part of their lives for over forty years. Amanda retired from UAB, where she had been a nurse for twenty-five years, primarily in women’s health and research. She served as Assistant Director of the Institutional Review Board. Her career was spent caring for others.

Amanda is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, James Robert Murphy, Jr., as well as her treasured children Margaret Murphy Yeilding (Wilson), and Garrett Parkman Murphy, of Vestavia Hills, AL. She is also survived by brother John Collier Gullahorn (Sonia), sister Chassey Atkins Simmons (Jeff), niece Haley Gullahorn Tusing (Matt), nephews, William Collier Gullahorn III (Brandi), Jackson, Tucker and Griffin Simmons, sister-in-law, Mary Jane Murphy Bennett (Sterling), only first cousin Stoney Boggs Dvornik (Skip), and special aunt Mary Garrett Daniel (Robert). Amanda was preceded in death by her parents, the Honorable Judge William C. Gullahorn, Jr., Mrs. Sidney Carol Garrett Gullahorn, and Jennifer Jenkins Gullahorn.

Services will be held on Wednesday, March 28, 2018, with visitation at 9:00 a.m. and the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church. A graveside service and interment will follow at the Garrett family Cemetery in Centre, AL. It is requested that any donations or memorials be to the Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church Music/Handbell fund or the Greater Birmingham Humane Society.

The family wishes to offer our sincerest gratitude and love to our beloved friends and family who have been with us through this entire fight. Additionally, we wish to thank the caregivers and medical professionals at UAB, especially Drs. Robert M. Conry, Sharon Spencer, and Bernard Camins, along with the compassionate staff in the UAB- Acton Road Cancer Center.
