Security tight for Canada Day celebrations

daoleduc/iStock/Thinkstock(OTTOWA, Canada) – Security has been ramped up for Canada Day celebrations across the country.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Saturday for a traditional day-long concert and celebration, but officials say they’ll have to go through extremely tight, airport-style security.

Police are patrolling the streets with heavy weapons and roads are blocked with dump trucks filled with 22 tons of sand.

Ottowa Mayor Jim Watson defending the security measures, saying “At the end of the day, what used to be a bomb and a gun is now a truck or a knife.”

Police also say spectators can expect to see snipers on rooftops, and surveillance cameras monitoring events on the hill.
