Gadsden State to Host Cardinal Commit for Incoming Freshmen

GADSDEN STATE TO HOST CARDINAL COMMIT FOR INCOMING FRESHMEN

Incoming freshmen at Gadsden State are invited to attend Cardinal Commit, an event providing information about services, programs and more.

“We want our students to be successful in their first semester and beyond,” said Laura Swann, director of Enrollment Services. “The best way to ensure that success is by giving them the tools they need before classes begin.” At Cardinal Commit (formerly known as FOCUS), students who have already been admitted to Gadsden State will have the opportunity to participate in group advising with the Enrollment Services staff. “Group advising will feature tips for success on building the perfect college schedule,” she said. “We will explain the abbreviations on the course schedule and teach them how to read test scores, pair courses, understand the college calendar and become familiar with important policies and dates.”

Cardinal Commit events will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon and are available on different dates at four of Gadsden State’s campuses:

  • June 21 – Wallace Hall Auditorium on the Wallace Drive Campus in Gadsden
  • June 22 – Computer Science Auditorium on the Ayers Campus in Anniston
  • July 18 – Gadsden State Cherokee in Centre
  • July 19 – Auditorium at the McClellan Center in Anniston
  • July 20 – Wallace Hall Auditorium on the Wallace Drive Campus in Gadsden

Students should arrive at 8:30 a.m. to sign-in and receive their information packet. The opening session begins at 9 a.m. followed by group advising at 9:45 a.m. Students will go to myGadsdenState training at 10:30 a.m. “myGadsdenState is the college’s internal portal for students, faculty and staff,” Swann said. “Understanding how to use the site is crucial to the success of our students.” While students participate in the training session, parents will participate in a parent panel. “We encourage parents to attend Cardinal Commit so they are well-informed about Gadsden State programs and services,” she said. “This panel gives parents the opportunity to ask questions to Gadsden State administrators.”

At 11:30 a.m., Cardinal Commit students will learn about student services available at Gadsden State. These services include the bookstore, Cardinal Writing Center, the Math Lab, Career Services, the library, Student Support Services and Veterans Upward Bound. During this time, students also have the opportunity to get their parking decals, confirm admissions statuses and visit the bookstore. A special breakout session will also be available during this time for ACE Institute (dual enrollment) students. “From noon to 2 p.m., after the official event has concluded, Gadsden State faculty will be available to assist students with individual academic advisement,” Swann said.
