Another small earthquake was detected Friday in north Alabama, the second in the region in the past two weeks. Thursday’s quake occurred near Fort Payne in northeast Alabama, according to the U.S. Geologic Survey.
The magnitude of the quake was 2.6 – a small quake that usually isn’t felt by people.The quake also occurred more than eight miles below the earth’s surface, the USGS said. The region has faults and a history of small earthquakes.

The quake was detected at 9:08 a.m. Friday about nine miles east southeast of Fort Payne near the Georgia line.

The earthquake two weeks ago occurred on May 19 in the central part of north Alabama, about 10 miles southwest of Decatur. The magnitude of that quake was 2.4.
