Piedmont Officials Agree to Sell Property to Piedmont Rescue Squad

The Piedmont City Council, on Tuesday, agreed to sell a parcel of land to the Piedmont Rescue Squad and EMS to aid with their expansion.

Officials sold the South Center Avenue property to the rescue squad for $8,510. Payment from the sale of the property will be used to relocate a skate park that currently occupies the lot and is popular with the city’s youth.

Piedmont Rescue Squad Chief Phillip Winkles had presented the council with an offer for $4,000. However, after appraising the surplus property for $11,000, officials requested the $8,510 price tag in order to cover the estimated cost of relocating the skate park.

“We’re not trying to make any money on this,” said Mayor Bill Baker, adding that the city just wanted to “break even.”

After consulting with the Piedmont Rescue Squad board member over the phone, Winkles agreed to pay the amount the council requested.

The property, which adjoins the rescue squad’s current headquarters that was acquired in late 2015, will allow the nonprofit organization to construct a building to house ambulances, boats, and other equipment.

In other business, the council agreed to contribute the annual fee of $25,193 to the Nonurban Area Public Transportation Program for the fiscal year 2018.

Bills for payment were approved in the amount of $437,667.99.

Also, the council voted to open the city’s museum every Friday and Saturday beginning this June.

The next regular Piedmont City Council Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 16th, following the work session, which is set for 5:30pm.
