Sotheby’s(LONDON) — A David Bowie art auction has collected $30.7 million, more than double its value, so far.
The three-part, two-day auction at Sotheby’s in London titled “Bowie/Collector” featured 47 pieces of artwork– valued between $10.2 million and $14.8 million–on Thursday, its first day of sale. According to Sotheby’s, 46 countries were registered to bid for the Bowie-owned art.
The first part of the collection included some of the late musician’s most valuable pieces; the most expensive being Jean-Michel Basquiat’s “Air Power,” which was sold for $9 million.
Frank Auerbach’s “Head of Gerda Boehm” sold for $4.8 million. In an interview with the New York Times, Bowie said of the painting, “My God, yeah! I want to sound like that looks.”
