Northwest Georgia School Cafeteria Closed Down Due to Roach Infestation

CHS Cafeteria

Students will not be eating food prepared in the Cedartown High School cafeteria after school officials discovered an infestation of roaches in the school’s kitchen.

According to Polk Schools Superintendent William Hunter, Cedartown High School’s cafeteria scored a 91 on its most recent health department inspection a little over a month ago, and the bug problem had only recently come to light.

“It was reported to me a couple of weeks ago that we have some problems with some bugs in the cafeteria,” said Dr. Hunter. “The cafeteria is very clean, it had a 91 plus health number.”

He says the contracted exterminator company has had issues trying to knock out the population of German roaches that have become an issue in the kitchen area.

“What they’ve tried just hasn’t worked,” said Hunter. “It gets down to the point that if I won’t eat in that cafeteria, I certainly don’t want kids to either. We are going to make other plans, we have made other plans.”

Those plans include completely shutting down the kitchen and sealing it off, while bringing in food from other schools to feed the students. Dr. Hunter explained that a more aggressive attack on the problem will be made in the coming days. The last day of class in Polk School District is Friday, May 30th.
