Cherokee County “One Cent Sales Tax/School Tax” Will NOT Be On June Primary Ballot

Marci Foster 1There’s been a great deal of debate over the continuation of the one cent sales tax, or School Tax, in Cherokee County – however legislative action, or INACTION rather – has effectively brought that debate to an end – at least for now.

WEIS Radio News spoke with Commissioner Marcie Foster Friday morning, concerning the fact that the tax will NOT be on the 2014 June Primary ballot

We asked Commissioner Foster if having active support from Cherokee County could’ve made a difference in pushing the legislation through

A special called meeting of the Cherokee County Commission was held in February, and the sole item on the agenda was discussion of the one-cent sales tax, which is due to expire on September 30th of this year (2014)

That sales tax generated roughly one-and-a-half million dollars each year for the school system – where that shortfall will now be made up remains to be seen.

WEIS Radio has calls in to Senator Phil Williams, County Commission Chairman Kirk Day, and Superintendent Mitchell Guice for their reactions on the situation.

We’ll have more on this story as it develops.
