SAND ROCK – Golf was never something Sand Rock’s Mason Agan thought would be part of his future. Baseball was the sport he loved growing up, but that all changed when he and his dad Barry went to a golf range.

“It all just kind of clicked, and we played every day,” Agan said.

That playing around every day has now led Agan to signing a golf scholarship. He inked with Wallace State of Hanceville on Thursday afternoon.

All the more amazing is Agan hasn’t played a round of high school golf yet. He’ll help pioneer the inaugural Sand Rock golf team, which begins play this spring.

“It’s amazing to be able to get a college offer. I never thought golf was ever going to be in my life,” Agan said.  “It’s all happened so fast.”

Sand Rock golf coach Tanner Nelson said Agan has earned his golf scholarship on his own.

“He works hard at it and he’s got a bright future ahead,” Nelson said. “I think this is something he can do for a while. Hopefully he continues to develop and get stronger.”

Nelson also calls Agan a leader for the other Sand Rock golfers.

“I think that’s one of the biggest things he is for us, for some of these guys who haven’t played as much golf as he has. They look up to him,” Nelson said. “Some nights, when they’re not playing well, he can kind of carry that team score. He can hit the ball a long way, and he’s got a great short game. Right around the green he does really well.”

Agan plays in tournaments in the Apex Junior Golf Organization (formerly the Alabama Junior Golf Organization). He shot a 4-under 68 at Limestone Springs in Oneonta and shot 3-under 69 at Musgrove Country Club in Jasper. He said he has five wins this year on the AJGO tour.

The AJGO is actually where Agan met tour director Jammie Lett. Lett is also the golf coach at Wallace State. He took notice of Agan’s abilities, which led him to offer Agan a scholarship.

But before he roars on the links with the Lions, Agan plans to get the Wildcat golf program off to a solid start this coming spring.

“I think we carry a lot of expectations,” Agan said. “I think we can make a state run. We have some good golfers and I’m ready to see what we can do.”
