HOKES BLUFF– Danny Floyd Coffelt answered calls to serve his country, his community, and his neighbors throughout his life. Now, the Hokes Bluff Fire Department is remembering the retired firefighter and EMT for that dedication.
Coffelt, 77, died Oct. 24, according to his funeral-home-published obituary.
The Hokes Bluff Fire Department described him as one of its most dedicated volunteers. Whether a call came overnight or interrupted his day, the department said Coffelt was ready to help.
He held nearly every position within the department, according to its tribute. Although retired, he still stopped by the station to visit and share stories.
“Danny held just about every position with the fire department and always had a servant’s heart,” the department wrote.
His service also extended beyond Hokes Bluff. Coffelt served with the Air Force in Thailand in 1970–71 and belonged to the Army National Guard.
At Anniston Army Depot, he first worked in the electric shop. Later, he joined the depot’s fire department, retiring as a captain in 2009.
Born Feb. 7, 1949, in Gadsden, Coffelt graduated from Emma Sansom High School in 1967 and attended Gadsden State Community College.
Outside work, he continued playing softball until age 73 in 2022. He was also a longtime Cross Creek Community Church member who enjoyed his family, including golf-cart rides with great-grandson Kaysen Jay.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Darlene Fletcher Coffelt; children Janae Coffelt Bryant, Wesley Coffelt, and Deidre Coffelt Taylor; and sister Suzanne Coffelt Vest. He also leaves grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at Cross Creek Community Church, with Brother Chris Walker officiating. Visitation begins at noon, and burial follows at Union #3 Cemetery.
Instead of flowers, the family requests donations to Cross Creek Community Church of Hokes Bluff or Hokes Bluff Fire Department.
