CENTRE– Gadsden State Community College and the City of Centre will formalize a new partnership Wednesday to strengthen public safety coordination.

The signing will begin at 9 a.m. Sept. 23. It will take place in the front lobby of the Academic Building on the Gadsden State Cherokee campus.

According to a college news release, the memorandum of understanding creates a framework for cooperation between two departments. The agreement covers the Gadsden State Police and Public Safety Department and the Centre Police Department.

Public Safety Agencies to Share Resources

Under the agreement, the departments may combine personnel, equipment, and other available resources. Officials said they can use the arrangement when circumstances require additional public safety support.

For example, the partnership could help during graduations, large-scale events, special activities, and emergencies. It could also support other situations that require a coordinated law enforcement presence.

In addition, the MOU will promote advance planning, resource sharing, and coordinated operations when both departments consider assistance appropriate. Each agency will retain its own authority, policies, and responsibilities.

However, the agreement aims to improve communication and coordination whenever either department requests mutual assistance.

Officials Emphasize Safety and Cooperation

Gadsden State Police Chief Jay Freeman called the agreement an exciting step for the college and the city.

“Anytime we can combine resources and work together to better serve the community and our college campus community, it is a win for everyone,” Freeman said.

Freeman also thanked Centre Mayor Jay Howell, Police Chief Kirk Blankenship, and the City of Centre for supporting Gadsden State and its Cherokee campus.

Similarly, Gadsden State President Alan Smith said the agreement reflects the college’s commitment to safe, welcoming campuses.

“The safety of our students, employees and visitors is always a priority at Gadsden State,” Smith said.

Smith said the partnership builds on the college’s relationship with the City of Centre. He added that it will help both agencies respond when they need additional resources.

Meanwhile, Howell said the agreement demonstrates the city’s commitment to cooperation and community safety.

“Gadsden State is an important part of our community,” Howell said.

The mayor said resource sharing and stronger coordination will help both agencies serve people who live, work, learn, and attend events in Centre.

Centre Police Chief Kirk Blankenship also stressed the importance of cooperation among law enforcement agencies.

“Strong partnerships allow law enforcement agencies to respond more effectively and efficiently,” Blankenship said.

As a result, Blankenship said joint planning will better prepare the departments for major events and other requests for mutual assistance.

Signing Scheduled at Cherokee Campus

The signing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Sept. 23 at the Gadsden State Cherokee campus. The ceremony will take place in the front lobby of the Academic Building.
