Commissioners at the August 24th meeting approved the Appalachian Regional Commission grant application associated with the construction of a new park office at Cherokee Rock Village. This approval came at the request of the Parks and Recreation Board, who had already consulted an architect and procured plans. The million dollar grant would match up to $500,000. The park board and commission appropriations would have to make up any difference.
Also in the planning meeting, EMA Director Shawn Rogers stated that Cherokee County will be having a 25th anniversary 911 ceremony on September 11th. It should start a little after 8:30 am in front of the courthouse and will proceed past the schools.
In the meeting itself, commissioners approved the $225,520 STAR Grant, appointed Steve Tucker to the Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourist Association, and approved a change order that allowed the animal shelter roof’s completion. County Administrator Daniel Steele explained that a second change order would allow the county to pour the parking lot for almost $50,000 less than their quoted price. The commission approved.
Other action focused on transportation. The commission approved to take bids for fire repairs at the highway department shop. Joshua Kruse was hired as an HMT-1. The group also approved County Engineer Evan Morgan’s 2027 Rebuild Alabama County Transportation Plan budget.
