Gadsden State, City of Gadsden Break Ground on 10-Court Tennis Center

GADSDENGadsden State Community College and the City of Gadsden broke ground Thursday, Aug. 20, on a new 10-court tennis center.

The facility will become the latest addition to Gadsden Sports Park. Officials said it will serve Gadsden State student-athletes and the greater Gadsden community.

The tennis center will stand behind the college’s Wallace Drive Campus along the Coosa River. The project continues efforts to expand the park as a regional destination for athletics and recreation.

“This project is another great example of what can happen when we work together to invest in our students and our community,” Gadsden State President Alan Smith said. “These courts will provide an outstanding home for our student-athletes while also creating a resource that can be enjoyed by the community.”

Smith thanked the city, the Alabama Community College System, and other project partners for supporting the campus and region.

Partnership Expands Gadsden Sports Park

Gadsden Mayor Craig Ford said the tennis center continues a longstanding partnership between the city and college.

“The City of Gadsden and Gadsden State have had a fantastic partnership for years, and this Gadsden Sports Park project is just a continuation of that,” Ford said.

Ford credited Gadsden State with improving residents’ lives and supporting the city’s industrial recruitment efforts. He also thanked college and ACCS leaders, city employees, contractors, and others involved in the project.

Speakers at the groundbreaking included Smith, Ford, and City Engineering Director Heath Williamson. ACCS Chief Facilities Officer Mark Salmon also addressed those attending.

Representatives from Milam & Co. and Chambless King Architects also participated. Following the remarks, officials and project representatives gathered for the ceremonial groundbreaking.

“This facility represents more than new tennis courts,” Smith said. “It represents another shared investment in Gadsden.”
