The Centre City Council met in a work session August 3rd. After 15 minutes behind closed doors, the group opened up to the media. Members considered upcoming expenditures, including what to spend in this fiscal year and what to earmark for the next.
One item the council wants to move on quickly regards an Atrium outdoor basketball court. Mayor Jay Howell reported that Atrium Health has a foundation that would build and pay for the court, which would also include two soccer goals. The city would just have to pay for the pad underneath it.
While the area between the Mary George Waite Community Center and J.W. Hampton Field is being considered, the court’s location has not been finalized. The council members hope to act on the location, funding, and other details at the August 11th meeting.
Since revenues have been exceeding expenditures, council members discussed upping the budget to $7 million. To prepare for further budget discussions, the council members agreed to make a list of departmental needs and whether or not any new employees are needed.
The council also considered potential ball park improvements and whether or not to add a budget line item for paving.
The group hopes to approve the next budget by the first September council meeting.
