CENTRE– The Gadsden State Cherokee nursing class has set a campus enrollment record. The Cherokee Campus welcomed 54 nursing students this summer, the largest group in its history.
Gadsden State Community College received 90 applications for the Centre-based program. That was the highest number ever submitted for the Cherokee Campus.
As a result, the college reached a new enrollment milestone. The numbers also show growing interest in local nursing education.
Record Interest in Cherokee Campus Program
Randi Wright, director of Gadsden State’s Cherokee Campus, called the record an important achievement.
“This is an exciting milestone for our Cherokee Campus and our community,” Wright said.
According to Wright, the application total shows growing interest in the nursing program. It also highlights the college’s role in preparing future health care professionals.
“We are proud to have welcomed our largest class yet,” Wright said.
The record expands access to nursing education in Cherokee County. In addition, it gives more area students a pathway into the health care workforce.
Preparing Students for Patient Care
Students in the Associate Degree Nursing program complete several forms of training.
First, they receive classroom instruction covering patient care and nursing practices. They also develop practical skills through laboratory training.
Next, students gain clinical experience in health care settings. That experience helps prepare them to work directly with patients.
After completing the program, graduates must receive approval from the Board of Nursing. They may then take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses.
The examination is commonly known as the NCLEX-RN. Passing it is required to become a licensed registered nurse.
Supporting the Regional Nursing Workforce
Dr. Joey Battles, dean of Health Sciences, said local employers continue to need qualified nurses.
“Healthcare employers across our region continue to need skilled, compassionate nurses,” Battles said.
Meanwhile, more students are choosing to pursue nursing careers. Battles said the application total reflects that growing interest.
He also credited the nursing faculty and the reputation of Gadsden State graduates. Additionally, he pointed to the career opportunities available within nursing.
“We are excited to welcome this outstanding class and support them throughout their educational journey,” Battles said.
Gadsden State prepares graduates to enter the workforce or continue their education. Many graduates later serve patients throughout Northeast Alabama.
Therefore, the record class represents more than an enrollment milestone. It also supports efforts to meet the workforce needs of area health care providers.
