CEDAR BLUFF-At the July 13th meeting, the Cedar Bluff Town Council approved a $160,000 property purchase on Highway 68 next to the snow cone business past City Hall. The structure will house the police department.
The town also approved a resolution to change the name of Harris Avenue to Jessie Lane in honor of the late Jessie Clifton. Numerous family members were present to commemorate the occasion.
Police Chief Jeremy Stepps presented the “Life Saving Award” to Sergeant Investigator Jamie Chatman. In a critical incident involving a female victim suffering from a life threatening gunshot wound, Sergeant Chatman immediately assessed the severity of the injuries and, along with Centre Police Officer Brandon Thompson, rapidly applied two tourniquets to control catastrophic bleeding, helping save the victim’s life.
In other business the council agreed to a five-year municipal property tax abatement for the Piggly Wiggly of Cedar Bluff. The business plans on making a one million dollar investment in their store.
To help allay costs for their employees, the council agreed to pay 20% of their family coverage insurance plans. Mayor Bill Warren stated that this would equate to $191 of the $950 per month it currently costs for family coverage.
The council also passed an ordinance restricting new liquor stores from being within a one-mile radius of each other; agreed to surplus a Chevy Tahoe police vehicle, and passed a resolution to apply for a Community Development Block Grant to help re-pave roads.
Instead of acting on zoning ordinance changes, the council agreed to have a special hearing before the next meeting, which is scheduled for August 10th.
