At the July 7th Piedmont City Council meeting the group surprised WEIS radio station owner, Jerry Baker, with a plaque and recognition. The council and Mayor Pro Temps Carlos Farmer commended Baker for over forty years of service to Piedmont and the surrounding counties.
In other business, the council approved the purchase of a new bucket truck after futile repair attempts on the current one. While the cost of the vehicle will run $255,929.00, the city should pay only $4,609.17 after the application of an Energy Southeast grant.
To tackle sewer system improvements, the council passed a resolution to apply to the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs for a $500,000 grant with a local match of $115,200. The city also plans to use $500,000 of Appalachian Regional Commission funds on the project for a total of $1,115,200.
After hearing a report from Police Chief Nathan Johnson, the council approved the repairs for a Chevy Tahoe to replace the engine at a cost of $9,618.38.
The next meeting of the Piedmont City Council is planned for July 21st.
