Child Safety Doesn’t Take a Holiday

The Children’s Advocacy Center of Cherokee County has published some prevention tips to keep in mind at holiday activities such as cookouts, lake outings, or fireworks displays.

Avoid isolated one-on-one situations. Children should stay where trusted adults can easily see and check in with them.

Keep communication open. Let your child know they can always come to you if something makes them feel uncomfortable—even if it’s someone they know.

Respect body safety boundaries. Teach children that they can say “no” to unwanted hugs, touches, or affection, and that safe adults will respect their boundaries.

Know who is supervising your child. Make sure expectations are clear and supervision is active—not assumed.

Create a family safety plan. Decide where to meet if you get separated and remind children who their trusted adults are.

The best holiday memories are made when children feel safe, seen, and protected.
