House Fire in Turkey Town Sends Two to Hospital; Home Deemed Total Loss

TURKEY TOWN – Two people were transported to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation after an early Tuesday morning house fire in the Turkey Town community.

The fire occurred at a residence in the 6000 block of Ewing Avenue, also known as Old Highway 411. According to the Coates Bend Fire Department, the two occupants were the only people inside the home when the fire broke out.

Firefighters from multiple agencies responded through mutual aid, including the Hokes Bluff, Tidmore Bend, and Gadsden Fire Departments, assisting Coates Bend firefighters in battling the blaze.

Fire officials said the home’s complicated construction, combined with the advanced stage of the fire, ultimately resulted in the structure being declared a total loss. Firefighters initially conducted an interior attack but were forced to withdraw from the building when conditions deteriorated, and it became unsafe to continue operations inside.

Crews then transitioned to a defensive firefighting strategy, focusing on containing the fire and preventing it from spreading to nearby properties. As of Tuesday afternoon, firefighters from the Coates Bend and Tidmore Bend Fire Departments remained on scene conducting defensive operations and monitoring the structure to prevent any extension of the fire.

The Coates Bend Fire Department expressed its appreciation to the Hokes Bluff, Tidmore Bend, and Gadsden Fire Departments for their assistance during the incident.

Firefighters also faced challenging weather conditions while battling the blaze. Temperatures were in the mid-90s Tuesday, with heat index values expected to reach as high as 109 degrees under a Heat Advisory. The extreme heat added another layer of danger to an already hazardous emergency response.

The cause of the fire has not been determined and remains under investigation.
