The city of Centre took the first step to making Estes Field a ticketed entertainment venue. At the September 8th meeting, council members approved the application for an Appalachian Regional Commission grant, which would be a 50/50 match up to $500,000. If awarded the grant, Estes Field would receive improved lighting, fencing, and bathrooms with drainage and structural issues in the wall fixed.
Those at the meeting heard a brief history of Estes Field from Jo Bob Ray of the Historical Preservation Society of Cherokee County Alabama. Jeff Sauls also informed council members of the society’s future plans.
In other business council members approved the rebuilding of a fence at the pickle ball courts. Because of rocky layer of compression underneath the surface, the rebuild is labor intensive and expensive, carrying the price tag of $24,942.
The council approved a new parks and recreation part-time job. The person in this position would run concessions and help with sports coordination. They will earn $13 an hour for no more than 32 hours a week.
In other business, the council accepted a $1,683 quote to repaint a utility work bed truck, agreed to a $4,648.53 door to put between the accounting clerk and the accounts payable office, and authorized Ladd Environmental for $11,000 of engineering services that will lead to a new parking lot at the community center.
Members scheduled a public hearing for October 13th at 5:15 pm about adopting the 2015 ICC building code and approved donations of $1,200 to the CED Mental Health Center and $7,500 to the Cherokee County Health and Rehab Center to pay for meals.
The council tabled a proposal to update the fire protection for the fire department and approved Christmas decorations for City Hall.
