CHEROKEE COUNTY— As temperatures rise and more residents and visitors head to Weiss Lake for summer recreation, Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver is encouraging boaters to prioritize safety before spending a day on the water.
With boating, fishing, tubing, water-skiing, and other recreational activities increasing during the summer months, Sheriff Shaver emphasized that taking a few simple precautions can help prevent accidents and ensure everyone returns home safely.
Shaver urged boaters to make safety checks part of their routine before leaving the dock, including ensuring that every passenger has a properly fitting life jacket and checking weather conditions before heading out on the water. He also stressed the importance of having an emergency plan in place should an unexpected situation arise.
In addition, the sheriff reminded boat operators to avoid consuming alcohol while operating a vessel, noting that boating under the influence can have serious and potentially tragic consequences.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office encourages everyone enjoying Weiss Lake and the county’s waterways this summer to practice safe and responsible boating habits. Officials hope that by taking proper precautions and remaining alert on the water, residents and visitors alike can enjoy a safe and enjoyable summer season.
