ROME– The Rome Police Department is warning residents to be on alert for a growing scam in which criminals pose as pharmacies, insurance companies, or prescription providers in an effort to steal money and personal information.
According to authorities, victims receive a phone call from someone claiming to represent their pharmacy. The caller may say there is a problem with a prescription, insurance coverage, payment information, or medication order. The scammer then attempts to obtain sensitive information such as credit card numbers, bank account details, personal identifying information, or payment over the phone.
Police say residents should be cautious of any unexpected call requesting financial or personal information, even if the caller appears to know the recipient’s name, prescription details, or other personal information.

The Rome Police Department recommends that anyone receiving such a call immediately hang up and contact their pharmacy directly using the phone number listed on their prescription bottle or the pharmacy’s official website. Consumers are also encouraged to independently verify any claims regarding prescription issues and never provide payment information during an unsolicited phone call.
Officials stress that scammers often use information obtained from other sources to appear legitimate and gain a victim’s trust. However, the presence of personal details does not guarantee that a caller is who they claim to be.
The Rome Police Department reminds residents that when it comes to unexpected requests for money or personal information, it is always best to verify before paying and never share sensitive information with an unknown caller.
