SOUTHSIDE– The Etowah County Emergency Management Agency responded to the Broughton Springs area Monday afternoon after a resident discovered an unknown substance in the water.
Emergency personnel deployed oil-absorbing booms to contain the substance. Crews also placed special absorbent pads in the water to help with cleanup.
Officials will leave the booms and pads in place long enough to absorb the material. Crews will then remove the equipment and dispose of it properly.
The agency could not precisely identify the substance or confirm where it originated. However, officials reported that the spill remained confined to a relatively small area.
The agency also reported no observed harm to native species in the affected area.
