GADSDEN — The Gadsden Fire Department recently hosted a Surface Water Rescue course sponsored by the Alabama Fire College, bringing together firefighters and emergency responders from across the region for specialized training in water rescue operations.
The intensive course combined classroom instruction with hands-on practical exercises designed to prepare emergency personnel for the challenges of operating in moving water environments. Participants received training in recognizing water hazards, using specialized rescue equipment, and performing advanced rescue techniques in potentially dangerous conditions.

According to the Gadsden Fire Department, water rescue training is among the most physically and mentally demanding disciplines in emergency services. Responders must be able to work safely in rapidly moving water while making critical decisions under high-stress situations.

The training holds particular importance for Gadsden due to the presence of the Coosa River and Black Creek within the city limits. While these waterways provide significant recreational and economic benefits to the community, they can also create serious hazards during flooding, severe weather events, and other water-related emergencies.

Fire officials said hosting the course reflects the department’s ongoing commitment to maintaining a highly trained rescue force capable of responding effectively to emergencies on local waterways.
By partnering with the Alabama Fire College and providing advanced training opportunities for regional responders, the Gadsden Fire Department continues to strengthen emergency preparedness and enhance public safety for residents and visitors throughout the area.
