CENTRE — WEIS Radio welcomed Cherokee County Sports Hall of Fame Board of Directors members Sid Garrett and Eric Ellis to the studio Thursday morning for a live interview with Jerry Baker to discuss the upcoming Cherokee County Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
You can hear the interview here:
The annual induction event will be held Saturday at Richard Lindsey Arena in Centre. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and the program will begin at 6 p.m. Organizers emphasized that the event is free to attend and encouraged the public to come out for an evening of recognition and fellowship.
During the interview, Garrett and Ellis discussed the 2026 class of inductees, which includes Tyrone Moore of Cedar Bluff, Sam Fife of Centre, Lauren Millsap Coursey of Centre, Harry Richardson of Centre, and Ricky Austin of Spring Garden.
The board members noted that this year’s class includes individuals who have made significant contributions to athletics in Cherokee County and represent a strong group of honorees.
Another topic discussed during the interview was the addition of a new recognition category known as “Teams of Distinction.” Under the program, schools throughout Cherokee County nominated teams to be honored for their accomplishments. The selected teams will receive plaques that will be displayed in the Hall of Fame before being returned to the schools.
The Teams of Distinction are:
- 1967 Cherokee County High School Football Team
- 1975 Gaylesville Trojans Football Team
- 1979 Spring Garden Basketball Team
- 1959 Cedar Bluff Football Team
- 1966 Sand Rock Wildcats Basketball Team
Garrett and Ellis noted that Cherokee County has produced many outstanding teams through the years, making the new recognition a fitting addition to the Hall of Fame program.
The interview also included discussion about WEIS Radio’s longtime coverage of local high school sports. The Hall of Fame representatives thanked the station and its staff for their support of area athletics over the years.
Baker recalled that 1985 was the first year WEIS had the ability to broadcast live sports at night and noted that Ellis was the station’s first play-by-play announcer for those broadcasts. Ellis reflected on that first broadcast and the role local radio has played in covering high school sports throughout the county.
Organizers said they are expecting a large crowd for Saturday’s ceremony and invited residents from across the area to attend.
The Cherokee County Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place Saturday at Richard Lindsey Arena in Centre. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the event begins at 6 p.m. Admission is free.
