He always said, “At the end of the day, the only thing a man has is his word.  He may not have a roof over his head, a shirt on his back, or a dollar in his pocket, but he has his word.” He lived by that rule and expected that of others.

Ken trusted the people that others wouldn’t.   He gave jobs to men that others would turn away.  He befriended and helped those that were “down on their luck”. He took IOU’S repeatedly from many that never paid him back.  He was a helping-hand to his neighbors.  He taught many young men a trade that they would carry with them forever.

Ken was incredibly smart and known to be able to fix anything mechanically.  People consulted him all the time for advice. He was the hardest working man we have ever known.

He loved racing and building vintage Go-Karts. That passion began in the 60’s. He won many trophies and even set a record. He also loved to fish and build things in his shop.

He was born February 14, 1948, in Lindale, GA to Mildred Grissom, in a house that his Grandpa Lambert built.  That house still stands today.

At 14, he was very mature for his age and worked side jobs to buy himself a car.  He would split his money with his Mama and keep enough for gas.  He had several lifelong friends that he stayed in contact with. He attended Pepperell High School until he took a job with his cousin doing tree work in Macon, where Margie lived.  Fate placed them at the Bibb County Skating Rink where they were instantly smitten with each other at 15 years old.

He drove a Baby Blue’56 Ford that said Midnight Playpen in gold on the driver side fender and on the dash.

Her family took an instant liking to him.  Margie’s dad even entrusted Ken to run his Gas Station and Auto parts business.Knowing it was true love, they eloped at age 16 and were married in Buchanan in 1965 by a local pastor.

By 1970 they had two daughters.  At age 22, they moved to Rome and bought their first home.  The next year he purchased Rome Saw Company at age 23, later known as Shorter Ave Saw and Mower.  Together, they continued to own and operate that business for the next 50 yrs.

Last week, they were blessed to celebrate their 61st Wedding Anniversary surrounded by family and friends.

He was recently preceded in death by his grandson, Timothy Obenlander.  In addition to Timmy, he was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred Grissom Cargle, his stepfather, Reno, his sister, Carolyn Royer Hicks, his mother in law and father in law, Hugh and Marjorie Mosely, and four brothers in law, Tommy, Jeremy, and John Mark Mosely, and Billy Vaughn.

Pallbearers include Dewayne Trotter, Frank Hughes, Tim Obenlander, Brad Owens, Tanner Hughes, and Justin Lamar.

Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, Oaknoll Chapel is honored to serve the family of Mr. Kenneth “Ken” Edward Grissom.
