ROME— As travel season increases, the Rome Police Department is warning residents to stay alert for scams targeting hotel reservations and travel bookings.
According to information released by the department, scammers are using phone calls, text messages, and emails to trick travelers into believing there is a problem with an existing hotel reservation or booking.
Police say scammers may pose as hotel staff, falsely claim a reservation has been canceled, request payment information a second time, or direct victims to fraudulent booking websites through suspicious links.

The Rome Police Department is urging travelers not to panic or rush into making payments or sharing personal information if contacted unexpectedly about a reservation issue.
Officials recommend travelers contact hotels directly using verified phone numbers rather than information provided in unsolicited messages. Residents are also encouraged to use trusted booking platforms, avoid clicking links from unexpected emails or text messages, and be cautious of anyone pressuring them to immediately “fix” a reservation problem.
Police say travelers should trust their instincts and take time to verify information before providing payment or personal details.
“If something feels off, pause and verify before paying,” the department advised.
The Rome Police Department encourages residents to remain vigilant during the busy travel season to avoid becoming victims of fraud.
