Cherokee County Animal Shelter Announces Temporary Intake Hold Due to Kennel Cough Cases

CENTRE-  The Cherokee County Animal Shelter has implemented an immediate temporary intake hold following confirmed cases of kennel cough among animals at the facility, according to information released by the shelter.

The intake hold is in effect immediately and will remain in place through May 6, 2026. Shelter officials stated that normal operations are expected to resume on May 7, pending clearance from consulting veterinarian Dr. Jeremy Deaton.

Kennel cough is described as a highly contagious respiratory illness in dogs, commonly causing symptoms such as a dry, persistent cough, sneezing, nasal discharge, gagging, and, in some cases, mild fever or lethargy. While most dogs recover with appropriate care, the illness can pose a greater risk to puppies, older dogs, and those with weakened immune systems.

According to the shelter, the infection spreads easily in environments where dogs are in close proximity, including shelters, boarding facilities, dog parks, and grooming locations. Transmission can occur through coughing and sneezing, direct contact between dogs, contaminated surfaces such as kennels and bowls, and airborne droplets.

During the intake hold period, the shelter will limit new animal admissions but will continue to respond to priority public safety situations. These include cases involving sick or injured animals, aggressive animals, animal cruelty investigations, and requests from law enforcement.

Shelter officials emphasized that the temporary measure is necessary to protect the health of animals currently in their care, as well as pets throughout the community. Pet owners are encouraged to take preventative steps, such as avoiding crowded dog areas, not sharing food or water containers between animals, maintaining up-to-date vaccinations, and consulting a veterinarian if their dog shows signs of illness.

For additional information, the Cherokee County Animal Shelter can be reached at 256-266-1390. Officials expressed appreciation for the public’s patience and cooperation as they work to contain the illness and ensure the safety of local animals.
